As fall officially descends upon us and the weather turns cooler and crisper, it’s time to use that change as an opportunity to increase our health and fitness game! Besides — who doesn’t love running with scarves, hats and mittens?

To help you increase your own fitness level this fall, we’ve come up with a checklist of five activities that will be sure to get you on the on-ramp to healthier living!

Step 1: Get that yearly check-up. Don’t put it off any longer, people! Cold and flu season is upon us, and it’s probably time to start thinking about getting that flu shot, if you like to do that. It’s also just good practice to get a yearly check-up to make sure everything looks good, and to preempt any serious health issues from getting worse. If you don’t have a personal physician, consider checking with your neighborhood clinic to see if they offer those services. (The CVS Minute Clinic, for example, offers flu shots and other services.)

Step 2: Use changing weather as an incentive. If you’re actually not the kind of person who likes wearing scarves, hats and mittens for your outdoor run, why not instead switch to some physical activities that take advantage of this time of the year? For example, have the whole family take to the yard and rake up all those fallen leaves (although it’s much more fun if you at least let everyone jump into one pile once they’re raked!); try organizing a touch football game with friends in the local park; or try rock climbing, hiking or biking (the changing color of the leaves will help keep you motivated as you sweat it out!).

Step 3: Give your cookbook a recipe overhaul. Just because the season has changed and all you want to do is sit in front of the fire with a nice bowl of Grandma’s Chowder doesn’t mean you actually have to. Okay, well sitting in front of the fire is fine — but why not take some time this fall to go through your old recipes and swap out any unhealthy ones with new, healthier options? For example, we’re dying to try these sautéed carrots with sage and this easy butternut squash risotto.

Step 4: Work for your food. Now’s the perfect time to head to a pumpkin or apple patch to pick out some fine specimens for your family to enjoy. Just hurry — this is a popular activity, and these items don’t tend to last too long!

Step 5: Check in on your financial fitness, as well. Doing a quick check on your overall budgeting and saving for the year is just as important as checking in on your physical health. In fact, fall is the perfect time to double down on your budget and reduce spending on unnecessary items (be honest, do you really need all 15 magazine subscriptions?), as well as to start stocking up on gifts for the holidays — or at least figuring out a savings plan to pay for them all.
