The spring weather means it’s time for one thing: spring vacation! Whether you’re taking to the beach or heading on a spa retreat, there’s a way to incorporate your fitness routine into every type of trip … and your body will thank you for it.
In order to incorporate your workout into a vacation and keep itfun, you’ll need to think outside the hotel gym. Here are a few tips that might help:
- Walk to Your Morning Breakfast: Assuming we aren’t talking miles and miles here, why not lace up those sneaks and throw on that sports bra and actually walk to your breakfast locations, as opposed to driving there. If you’re staying in a beach town, try googling restaurants in the area that will allow you and your family to walk along the beach to get there — you’ll sure feel much better about that second Bloody Mary if you do.
- Do a Little Research: Ensuring that you and your family have a good time while attempting to work out on vacation might require some research on your part ahead of time. (Of course the concierge at your hotel will probably be able to point you in the right direction, as well.) Hop online and do a quick search for any fun-looking hikes around where you’ll be staying, or find out if your all-inclusive offers water aerobics classes in the morning. Rock climbing, snorkelling and getting in a game of beach volleyball or Frisbee are all fun ways to work up a sweat while traveling, as well.
- Plan Tours That Include Some Exercise: Instead of sitting on a bus for hours while driving around a city, opt for a walking, biking or segway tour instead.
- Plan Strategically: Let’s be honest — half the fun of vacation is getting to eat tons of delicious food. Instead of trying to scale back on delicious treats during your trip, have some active things planned for after your big meals so that you feel better about downing all those extra calories. You don’t have to go overboard here, either — even shopping counts as an activity if you’re walking around from store to store.
- Sneak in Your Activities: If you or your family members aren’t keen to join in on that beach volleyball game, take a bike tour or walk to your breakfast, try sneaking in little bouts of exercise throughout the day in ways that no one will even notice. Pull out the old standbys, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator and parking a couple blocks away from your final destination. Every little bit counts.
